I wish to comment with regard to police actions during the November G-20 meeting.
My wife and I took the opportunity to go shopping on the Saturday of
the meetings, partly because we wanted to demonstrate our financial support
for those merchants who were at risk of losing business because of the
protests.
Thus, we witnessed some of the events now under examination.
We were very glad that the Ottawa Police did such a good job of protecting
public safety as well as public and private property. Over the course
of the three days, because of this excellent police work, there were few
personal injuries and little property damage. Thank goodness
we have such a well-trained police force. Otherwise, hooligans and
anarchists would have overrun our beautiful city.
We live in a democratic society that provides us with rights -- along with those rights are certain responsibilities. Protestors have the responsibility to obey laws and the rights of others. Unfortunately it seems that those who have instigated this review by the Citizen's Panel have conveniently forgotten these responsibilities.
